  1. Wales Air Ambulance (8.5.24) - Re: EMRTS Service

Dear Ms. Davies,

I am writing to Llywel Community Council on behalf of the Wales Air Ambulance Charity following the conclusion of the independently conducted EMRTS Service Review.

The Review revealed that there are opportunities to improve our service for patients across Wales. It was led by the Chief Ambulance Services Commissioner for Wales.

It revealed that:

Right now, we are not getting to around 2 to 3 people a day. These patients will be in a life or limb-threatening situation.

People in Mid Wales and North Wales do not have a localised air ambulance service overnight. They rely on a nighttime service from South Wales.

The service’s highly skilled medical teams based in Welshpool and Caernarfon are underused.

The Review sought to resolve these issues by examining, in detail, the most effective and efficient way of delivering the service to patients. Starting with over 200 potential options, an extensive 18-month review and appraisal process took place and the final recommended option was approved by the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee, recently.

Details of the service improvement are included in the brochure enclosed with this letter. We also have a dedicated section on our website that will continue to be updated over time - www.walesairambulance.com/serviceimprovement.

This development will allow us to attend more patients and save more lives in your region, and across Wales. It will also mean that Mid Wales and North Wales will get an overnight service closer to them, rather than relying solely on the current single overnight crew based in Cardiff.

During the eighteen-month process, the Charity respected the independence of the Review. In doing so, it has been mindful of its communications and engagement with supporters and stakeholders.

We now find ourselves in a position to once again be able to speak openly about the future of the service and the patient-focused rationale for change.

However, we completely understand the anxieties and anger expressed by some. From attending and listening to all the Commissioner’s public engagement sessions, we know how strongly you feel about provisions for rural communities. Some people feel this is another example of community loss.

We really want you to know, and believe, that we would never do anything to cause you and your loved ones future harm. This development aims to improve the service, not remove it.

Every development we have made over the past two decades has improved our service and that’s our only aim.

We genuinely believe we have a chance to deliver an even better service for you, your community, and communities across Wales, saving more lives.

We know that we have a lot of work to do to reassure communities in your county after a very long and emotional process. Now that the Review is over and we can talk about it, we graciously ask for an opportunity to listen and respond to your concerns so that we can show our absolute dedication to your communities and build trust in what we believe is a service improvement.

We will be visible across the region in the weeks and months ahead as we want to offer the reassurance that is much needed.

Our commitment to you is unwavering and unconditional. We will be there for you and your community – now and always.

If you have any questions that you would like us to answer, or concerns that you would like us to address, please let me know.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Sue Barnes
Chief Executive

  1. Nature recovery (9.5.24) - Hello Councillors and Clerks – many thanks to all of you who attended the Nature Recovery Funding & Information session on the 20th April. It was good to meet you!  For those who couldn’t make it, we are hoping to run a further event later in the year.

The Community & Town Council Nature Recovery Grants programme is now OPEN!  A total of £30,000 is available on a first come, first served basis – if you have an idea for a nature-based project we would love to hear from you.

The Application Form and Guidance are attached (English and Welsh versions), along with a note on resources and sources of support. If you know of others, please let us know and we’ll add them in.  We also have a guidance note on birds and nest boxes and can email it to you – let me know!

We’re very happy to talk through ideas for any project. If you are planning to apply for more than £500, we’ll come along to meet you for a site visit to discuss ways you can create space for nature and work with you on a simple, tailored plan to support your application.  If you have any queries at all about the process or what’s eligible for funding, please get in touch – we look forward to hearing from you!

On a side issue, at the event in April we also discussed the crucial role of Town and Community Councils in commenting on Planning Applications for newbuilds and renovation and demolition works. These can provide opportunities or be disastrous for some species. Please bear in mind that your scrutiny, comments and recommendations can make all the difference.

All best wishes,

Barbara
